Our Approach to Education
Rocky Mountain Charter School integrates STEAM education with Health & Wellness, Sustainable Agriculture, and Global Technology to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. Our interdisciplinary approach supports academic growth while helping students develop practical skills, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and personal well-being.
Students will engage in hands-on, project-based learning that connects classroom knowledge with real-world applications. Through agriculture, nutrition, technology, science, community partnerships, and experiential learning, RMCS will provide students with meaningful opportunities to explore, create, solve problems, and prepare for future education, careers, and responsible citizenship.

STEAM Education
Rocky Mountain Charter School integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning.
Students will investigate real-world questions, design solutions, experiment, build, create, and apply their learning across subject areas. From science and engineering challenges to technology, mathematics, design, and creative expression, students will be encouraged to think critically, collaborate effectively, and approach problems from multiple perspectives.
This integrated approach moves learning beyond individual subjects and helps students develop the creativity, adaptability, technical skills, and problem-solving abilities needed for future education, careers, and a rapidly changing world.
Holistic Development
Rocky Mountain Charter School supports the development of the whole student by recognizing that academic success is closely connected to physical well-being, emotional growth, positive relationships, and a strong sense of belonging.

Our approach brings health and wellness into everyday school life through physical activity, nutrition education, positive relationships, supportive learning environments, student engagement, and partnerships with families and the wider community.

Nutrition, Health & Wellness Education
Rocky Mountain Charter School helps students develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to make informed choices about nutrition, health, and personal well-being.
Through age-appropriate, hands-on learning, students will explore the science of nutrition, food preparation, healthy lifestyles, physical well-being, and the relationship between everyday choices and long-term health. These concepts can connect naturally with science, agriculture, physical education, and other areas of the curriculum.
Students will have opportunities to apply what they learn through practical experiences such as food preparation, nutrition-focused projects, and investigations into how food, activity, sleep, and other lifestyle factors contribute to overall well-being.
Finnish-Inspired Educational Practices
Inspired by elements of Finland’s internationally recognized approach to education, Rocky Mountain Charter School places student well-being, equity, trust, collaboration, and personalized learning at the heart of the educational experience.
RMCS will incorporate practices that support balanced school days, positive relationships, student independence, meaningful learning, and a strong sense of belonging. Our approach recognizes that academic achievement is strengthened when students feel supported, engaged, and connected to their school community.
Finnish-inspired practices will also influence aspects of school culture, including collaborative learning, student voice, healthy daily routines, and shared mealtimes that encourage social connection and community.
Rather than replicating another education system, RMCS will draw from proven international practices and adapt them thoughtfully within Alberta’s educational framework and the unique needs of our students and families.
Agricultural STEAM Education
RMCS will integrate agriculture, sustainability, science, and technology through practical, hands-on learning experiences that connect classroom study with the natural world.
Students will explore areas such as plant science, food systems, environmental stewardship, hydroponics, sustainable growing practices, agricultural technology, and the science behind modern food production. Learning will extend beyond the classroom through RMCS agricultural lands and opportunities to engage with farms, educational institutions, and other organizations with relevant expertise.
By connecting STEAM concepts with real agricultural challenges and environments, students can investigate, experiment, collect and analyze data, solve problems, and better understand how science, technology, and responsible land stewardship contribute to sustainable communities.
Project-Based Learning
Rocky Mountain Charter School will use project-based learning to connect academic knowledge with meaningful, real-world challenges. Students will investigate questions, design solutions, test ideas, collaborate with others, and apply learning across multiple subject areas.
Projects may bring together science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the arts, agriculture, health, sustainability, and other areas of study. Students will have opportunities to work individually and collaboratively, use specialized learning environments and technology, and develop solutions through research, experimentation, design, and practical application.
This approach helps students strengthen critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, adaptability, and problem-solving while developing the confidence to take greater ownership of their learning. As students progress through RMCS, projects can become increasingly complex and provide opportunities to connect classroom learning with the community, post-secondary institutions, industry, and other educational partners.
Global Technology Integration
Rocky Mountain Charter School will integrate technology across the curriculum as a practical tool for learning, creativity, communication, research, and problem-solving. Students will develop the skills to use technology thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively while understanding its role in an increasingly connected world.
Learning opportunities may include digital design, coding, robotics, data analysis, emerging technologies, multimedia creation, collaborative digital tools, and technology-supported research. Technology will also complement learning in areas such as science, engineering, agriculture, health, sustainability, and project-based studies, allowing students to investigate real-world questions and develop innovative solutions.
Through age-appropriate digital citizenship, responsible technology use, collaboration, and exposure to evolving technologies, RMCS will help students develop the adaptability, judgment, and technical confidence needed for further education, future careers, and responsible participation in a global society.

RMCS will recruit and support highly qualified educators who are committed to academic excellence, student well-being, collaboration, innovation, and meaningful relationships with students and families.
Our teachers will be supported through ongoing professional learning, mentorship, collaboration, and opportunities to strengthen their practice. Professional development will support interdisciplinary and project-based learning, STEAM education, technology integration, student-centred instruction, and the practical and experiential learning approaches that distinguish the RMCS program.
Educators will also have opportunities to learn from colleagues, community partners, educational institutions, industry professionals, and other organizations whose expertise can enrich teaching and student learning.

Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child
Rocky Mountain Charter School recognizes that student success is shaped by the entire school experience. Guided by the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model, RMCS will connect academic learning with student health, well-being, supportive relationships, family engagement, and meaningful community partnerships.
This whole-child approach will be reflected throughout the school environment—from classrooms, physical education and wellness spaces to nutrition education, outdoor learning, agriculture, student support services, and opportunities for collaboration and leadership.
RMCS will also build relationships with families, healthcare and wellness professionals, educational institutions, community organizations, businesses, and other partners whose knowledge and expertise can enrich student learning and strengthen the support available to students.
By connecting the school, family, and wider community, RMCS aims to create an environment where students feel healthy, safe, supported, engaged, and challenged to reach their full potential.
Optional Faith, Ethics & Cultural Studies
RMCS will offer optional enrichment opportunities in faith, ethics, and cultural studies that encourage students to explore ideas, traditions, values, history, and culture while developing respect for the diverse perspectives and experiences of others.
Learning opportunities may include areas such as world religions, ethics, faith traditions, cultural heritage, language, civilization studies, and related topics. Through thoughtful discussion and age-appropriate learning experiences, students can strengthen cultural understanding, critical thinking, personal reflection, and their ability to engage respectfully with different perspectives.
These programs will be entirely voluntary and available to interested students with parent or guardian direction. Participation is not a requirement of the RMCS academic program, and students may choose not to participate or may withdraw without academic penalty.
Optional faith, ethics, and cultural studies will be offered in addition to Alberta Education’s required instructional program. Through these enrichment opportunities, RMCS aims to support knowledgeable, respectful, thoughtful, and engaged young people who are prepared to participate positively in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
